SJE Students, Alumni, and More Publish in Disability Studies Quarterly + January Launch Event

January 1, 2026

We are proud to share that members of the SJE community—students, alumni, and faculty—are featured across a newly published special issue of Disability Studies Quarterly (DSQ), the flagship journal of the Society for Disability Studies. The , was published in December 2025 and will be celebrated with a launch event at OISE on January 16, 2026.

Special Issue: Mad Methods

The special issue Mad Methods is guest edited by Dr. Efrat Gold (SUNY University at Buffalo), who is teaching Disability Studies and the Media in SJE this semester, alongside Dr. Michael Rembis (SUNY University at Buffalo). The co-editors curate a collection that explores methodologies of madness, refusing normative research logics and instead centering mad ways of knowing, creating, and worlding. Readers are invited to begin with the co-editors’ introduction, “.”&Բ;

Members of the SJE community contributed articles across the issue, including:

Leanne Toshiko Simpson (SJE PhD Candidate), with Rowan McCandless and Sara Hashemi: “.”&Բ;

This article argues that hermit crab essays function as a generative mad writing method, enabling embodied disability storytelling and reclaiming narrative agency within and against institutional forms and languages.

Maria Karmiris (SJE PhD Alum): “.”&Բ;

This article calls on educators to engage Mad dreaming as a pedagogical practice that refuses colonial developmentalism and enacts anti-ableist, anti-sanist, and anti-colonial futures through speculative, relational, and playful modes of survival.

Jose “Miggy” Miguel Esteban (SJE PhD Candidate): “.”&Բ;

This article theorizes mad methodology through choreographic improvisation, framing failure, illegibility, and not-doing as embodied practices that gesture toward the fugitivity of mad study while resisting normative academic legibility.
