We share the sad news of the passing of our alumna Dr. Brader Adaleine Brathwaite, former Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Trinidad & Tobago, on February 27 in 2025.

Dr. Brathwaite was among the first female Chemistry graduates at the UWI St. Augustine. She then went on to further her education at the University of Toronto, earning a doctorate degree in Educational Psychology at OISE.

Dr. Brathwaite's first daughter Candace Brathwaite and her sister Tamara sat outside the meeting room where their mother defended her thesis at OISE. Candace was ten years old at the time and her sister Tamara was eight. They attended the Jesse Ketchum school during their mother's last year of study, with Professor David Hunt as her supervisor, and have many fond memories of OISE. Dr. Brathwaite's granddaughter Nia Pierre is interested in continuing the legacy and attending the University of Toronto in the future.

Dr. Brathwaite's career spanned over four decades as an author, teacher, researcher and policymaker. She was recognized for her role in the introduction of Computer Science in Trinidad and Tobago’s secondary schools, as a CARICOM Commissioner of Youth Development and for her leadership positions at the Ministry of Education, NIHERST, PAHO and the UWI.

Within her title of Deputy Dean at the UWI St. Augustine, she facilitated the accreditation of the faculty’s medical programme and spearheaded research on HIV/ AIDS education and youth development in the Caribbean and helped integrate HIV/ AIDS education into academic courses across the Caribbean, Latin America, North America, Europe and Africa.

Dr. Brathwaite was also an advocate for the Disabled Peoples International and substance abuse recovery programmes. In 2014, she was awarded the Public Service Medal of Merit (Silver) for her outstanding contributions to education in Trinidad and Tobago.
