Two faculty named recipients of 2025 Connaught New Researcher Award

Dr. Shozab Raza and Dr. Ellen Gutowski are among 50 named University of Toronto faculty who are recipients of the  for the 2024-25 academic year.

The annual awards support early-stage researchers in the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and other fields â€“ and aim to enhance their competitiveness for external awards. They are part of the Connaught Fund, Canada’s largest internal university research funding program.

Dr. Raza is a historical anthropologist who joined OISE's faculty in 2023. He is a founding member of Jamhoor, a movement-oriented Left magazine on South Asia and its diasporas. His research and teaching centre on critical and revolutionary theory, political anthropology, and political economy, with a focus on South Asia and the global South.

Dr. Gutowski, who received her PhD from Boston College, completed a clinical fellowship at Harvard Medical School, and a doctoral residency at Emory School of Medicine, researches intimate partner violence. She is particularly committed to understanding how systems-level responses to those affected may either promote well-being or unintentionally cause harm. She also wants to understand how providers and systems can be trauma-informed and anti-oppressive. She has received a number of grants and awards for her research.
