Colloquium: Nisrin Elamin on Land, Capital and Empire-making in Central Sudan
On the afternoon of March 27th, join us for a colloquium featuring Dr. Nisrin Elamin, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at the University of Toronto, on her research on land and empire in Sudan.
Dr. Elamin investigates connections between land, race, belonging and empire-making in Sudan and the broader Sahel. Using struggles over land as a lens, her multi-sited ethnography in central Sudan spans local courts, farming communities, investor conferences, agribusiness farms, government ministries, and Sufi zawiyas. Her research examines state surveillance of Sahelian migration, Gulf Arab corporate investments, and how communities contest recent enclosures in the Gezira.
Date and time: Friday, March 27 from 3 - 5 PM
Location: OISE building, room tbd.
Refreshments will be provided.
