As we bid farewell to this year, I am filled with gratitude reflecting on my first year as Dean. Getting to know the OISE community has been an incredible journey, and each day, I am amazed by the collective brilliance and passion that defines us.
OISE Dean Erica Walker discusses the support systems available to our community and emphasizes the significance of academic freedom, the right to freedom of expression, and compassion.
More than a week has passed since the tragic events of October 7 – beginning with the unspeakable atrocities committed by Hamas against Israeli civilians, actions that shocked and horrified many around the world. Since then, we have watched in horror and dread as the number of Palestinian civilian casualties has soared following Israel’s military response.
I know that many of us are deeply saddened and horrified by the recent violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the tragic loss of lives throughout the region. As Dean, I know that events in Israel and Gaza have intensified distress among our community — many of whom are worried about loved ones, friends, and colleagues and who have direct and indirect ties to the region. The safety and well-being of all at OISE is my foremost concern.
